THE
HEAVIEST THING ON THE SCALE
Once a deed is beloved to Allah,
the Exalted, then it is weighty on the scale. When the scale is heavy with the
righteous deeds, the slave prospers and succeeds.
Deeds var and are unequal; some are
more virteous than others. There are big and small, light and heavy deeds. The
Prophet (Solallohu ‘alaehi wasalm) has informed us that some deeds are heavy in
the scale, among them are:
Good Character
it includes easy demeanour, good countenance
and gentle words. Whoever is endowed with good character, persistent smile, and pleasant interaction
and is flexible, his deeds will be heavy in the scale and beloved to the
All-Beneficient.
The Prophet (Solallohu ‘alaehi
wasalm) has also extolled good character. He said, “There is nothing heavier
than good character put in the scale of a believer on the Day of Ressurection.”
(Tirmidhi)
Remembrance of
Allah
Profusely remembering Allah, saying
subhaanallah, Alhamdulillah and la ilaaha ill’Allaah makes a
servant beloved and draw him closer to Allaah. Whoever loves Allaah he
increases in His remembrance. The Prophet (Solallohu ‘alaehi wasalm) said, “Shouldn’t
I inform you of the bestof your deeds and the purest with your owner, the one
that raises your statusthe most and which is better for you than spending gold
and silver (in charity), better for you that you meet your enemy and you
strikes their necks and they strike yours.” Thdey (the Companions) said,
“Yes.” The Prophet (Solallohu ‘alaehi wasalm) said, “Remembrance of Allaah.”
(Ahmad)
A man came to the Messenger of
Allah and said, “O Messenger of Allaah, the commands of islam have become too
numerous for me, so give me a command to which I may adhere.” The Prophet
(Solallohu ‘alaehi wasalm) said, “Do not let your tongue cease to be moist
with the remembrance of Allaah.”(Ahmad)
Remembrance of allaah is weighty on
the scale as the Prophet (Solallohu ‘alaehi wasalm) mentioned: “Two are the
expressions which are light on the tongue, but heavy in the scale, dear to
Ar-Rahman (the Compassionate one): ‘Subhaanalloh wa bihamdihi, subhaanalloh
il-‘Atheem (Glory be to Allaah and praise is due to Him; glory be to
Allaah, the Great)’.” (Bukhari)
One of the best
word of remembrance is to say, “alhamdulillah” and it is heavy on the scale as
the Prophet (Solallohu ‘alaehi wasalm) said, “Cleanliness is of faith and
al-Hamdulillah (praise be to Allaah)
fills the scale, and SubhanaAllah (Glory be to Allaah) and
al-Hamdulillah fill up what is between the heavens and the earth.” (Muslim)
Endowment for
Allaah’s sake
An endowment is the act of specifying a part
of one’s wealth such as real estate and the income that accrues from that
portion oof the wealth is spenton pious endeavours as a means of approach to
Allaah the Exalted. Endowment is one of the peculiarities of Islam and it is
heavy on the scale. The Messenger
(Solallohu ‘alaehi wasalm) said, “Whoever tethers a horse in the cause of Allah motivated by his faith in
Allaah and his belief in His Promise, then what the horse has eaten or drunk
and its dung will be in his scale on the Day of Ressurection.”
The hadeeth contains an
encouragement for a Muslim to give something in endowment so that he may obtain its benefit. So, whoever tethers a
horse in the cause of Allaah, the horse’s eating to its fill, its watering and
dung – i.e. its ingestion and excretion – all of these will be heavy on the
scale of his good deeds on the Day of Resurection.
